ISOLA DI CAPRI
(CAMPANIA)
Villa Le Scale
The violet flowers of the hundred year old wisteria vines give welcome to Villa le
Scale, the Caprese house owned by, antiquarian and interior decorator, Anna Maria
Coronato. The property, which was owned by her family and is part of her childhood
memories, was begun in the 1700s when it was surrounded by grape vines. Built in
the neoclassical style, around the giant Magnolia tree which to this day is a beloved
fixture of the gardens, the villa was completed in the early 1800s. A few steps from
the main piazza of Anacapri, Villa le Scale is a special hotel, that has maintained
the atmosphere and personality of a private home. The nine rooms and suite all have
names (the Artist, the Voyager, the Venetian and the Oriental...) attached to the
history of it's guests.
The most important is the Collector's Room, with paintings
from the seventeenth century by Mattia Preti. The refurbishment saved the original
materials such as the 18th century Neapolitan majolica floor, while the furnishings
have been chosen by the villa's present owner. Outside the gardens are alive with
joy and colour, above all when the lantana, roses, melograno and bleeding hearts
are in bloom. What Anna Maria calls her "literary garden" is replete with cooking
herbs typical of Capri, some of which are very rare, like eighteen varieties of mint.
